Netball Rules Summary

NUMBER OF PLAYERS
Corporate netball is played six a side with four possible substitutes - a team can play with a minimum of four players. Mixed teams must have a minimum of two females on the court at all times.

SUBSTITUTES
Substitutes can be made:
(i) to replace an injured player
(ii) after a goal has been scored
Interchanges must occur at the sideline and players involved must make physical contact prior to the substitute entering the field of play.

DURATION
The game will consist of 2 x 12-minute halves with a 2-minute half time break.

COURT SIZE
The court size is 30 x 15 metres divided into thirds with a goal semi-circle at each end of the court.

PLAYER POSITIONS
There are no set player positions for general play but only four players from each team are permitted in any one third at one time and only two players from each team are permitted in the goal circle at one time. Players may interchange between thirds at any time.

HOW TO PLAY
The object of the game is for each team to pass the ball and score goals and prevent the other team from scoring.

COMMENCEMENT OF PLAY
The game is commenced with one player passing the ball from centre court.

After each goal the game is recommenced in the same manner by the non-scoring team.

The centre pass must be thrown to a player in the centre third. All players except for one opposition player must stay in either goal third until the umpire calls ‘play’.

GENERAL PLAY
Players may pass the ball to each other with no passes being thrown over a third.

A pass must be over at least a metre.

To receive a pass a player shall come to a stop, with shuffling and turning on the spot permitted.

A player must pass the ball or shoot for goal within 3 seconds of receiving the ball.

A ball thrown out of court shall be thrown in by the opposition at the point where the ball left the court.

The game is non-contact and as such all players must keep a distance of one metre from all other players. Allow the player with the ball to play the ball without interference.

GOAL SHOOTING
Goals can only be attempted from within the goal circle. No running or jumping shots for goal are permitted. A player may not step towards goal and shoot but must take the shot from where the ball was received.

To take a shot for goal a player must shout ‘Goal’ and cannot pass the ball to a player. The goal shooter cannot fake an attempt for goal but must take the shot. Defending players may not interfere with a shot for goal.

No rebounds are permitted. Once a goal attempt is made the opposition then gains possession.

There is no defence on the goal shooter and no attempt to intercept the goal shot is permitted.

Violation of the rules = penalty throw to the opposition.

When a penalty throw is given to a team the offending player must stand aside and not re-enter play until the throw has been made.

For any breach of the rules possession goes to the non-offending team. The umpire will play advantage and play on wherever possible.

* Intimidating play or ‘zoning’ is not permitted.

* Players may be sent from the court for misconduct or aggressive play.

IMPORTANT: Studded football boots are not permitted. All players must wear shoes.

Remove ALL jewellery and watches before the game (leave it at the office).
